From earlier genom, from German Genom, coined by German botanist Hans Winkler in 1920 as a blend of Gen (gene) +‎ Chromosom (chromosome). By surface analysis, gene +‎ -ome, or a blend of gene +‎ chromosome. Spelling altered to reflect the surface analysis.
